St Jean d'Aulps is one of the most historic
villages in the area. The 13th century abbey is built near the
site of the death of the pilgrim St Jean. The town grew in importance
around the abbey long before the town of Morzine was established
around the slate mining industry.
The village is still thriving,
and unlike it's close neighbours, it has not turned into a "resort" and is bustling all year
round. There
are schools with students from 2 to 14 years, a large health centre,
2 churches, cosmopolitan bars, super restaurants, butchers, bakers,
"8 à Huit"
convenience store (in french style opens 7:30 and closes 19:00 with
2 hours for lunch), town
hall, post office, tourist information and much more. |

With the clear bubbling waters of the river Dranse running
through the centre, the village is divided into two distinct areas. Chalet
la Moussiere is situated in the old square on the west side. Further
up the mountain behind the chalet is the resort of La Grande Terche
offering opportunities for both winter sports and summer activities.
The east side of the river hosts the main facilities of the town. It
is only a few minutes walk between the two. Both sides have large
churches and often narrow roads of typically rustic Savoyard chalets
and farmhouses. |
In the winter and summer seasons there are numerous activities
arranged by the local tourist information services. Major annual
events include a spectacular medieval fête in the abbey grounds every August.
